More Than Ham And Peeps

Easter is coming, bringing with it egg hunts, plastic grass…and food! What’s a holiday without a house or church full of people and enough food to feed them 5x over? 🙂 We live hours from our closest family so I’m not used to hosting a lot of people for the holidays, but we’re considering inviting some of the local college students over for an Easter dinner. This led to a Google search for Easter dinner Read more…

Bright Spot: Consistency Is Kickin’ In!

This weeks Bright Spot came from Amanda who identified her need for consistency and planning in our first week of working together. Over the past few months she has built a foundation of healthy habits, but working long night shifts every few days was wreaking havoc on her consistency. Her days off were full of experimenting with new foods (she has had some delicious and not-so-delicious, but hilarious, results!) and finding ways to work out Read more…

I Served Quinoa And My Family Glared: Pushback

I’ve been there too. You’re feeling guilty that your family thinks boxed mac&cheese is a food group so you decide to make a healthier meal. You got your daily steps in just finding the new ingredients in the grocery store, you slaved over Pinterest to find a recipe you thought they’d eat, and spent way longer than 7 minutes cooking it (the box is sounding pretty good again)…and then you get the glare when it’s Read more…

A Healthy Energy Boost? Yes, Please!

Green tea is nothing new…it’s been around for thousands of years. However, it’s only been recently that scientist have had the tools to study it and test the various health claims it’s users report. By far its biggest benefit comes from something called catechins, which are antioxidants that fight and might prevent cell damage in our bodies. The list of ailments that these catechins can potentially improve seems to grow by the day. This is Read more…

The 2 Meal Rule

I hesitate to give hard and fast rules for healthy eating because there are as many valid methods as there are people to try them. As long as your food is mostly real, whole food (fruits, veggies, nuts, meat, whole grains, legumes) and you’re eating a reasonable amount of it, you’re probably OK. The 2 Meal Rule isn’t hard and fast, but it’s a good rule of thumb. Basically, it’s the idea that almost no Read more…

Bright Spots…Help Is Around You If You’ll ASK!

Our Bright Spot this weekend is AWESOME! Hillary and I have been working together for 2.5 months. She has BIG goals and a willingness to experiment and learn. What she DIDN’T have was a local support network. In fact, she didn’t really want to tell anyone in ‘real life’ what she was doing because…what if she failed? (I should mention here: this is the #1 fear cited to me as a coach for not trying Read more…

I Want To Be That Mom

THAT Mom gets up and plays with her kids at the park. THAT Mom is able to run around the yard for a game of kick ball. THAT Mom is up for a bike ride or a hike at the state park. THAT Mom will wear a swimsuit and get in the pool with her family. THAT Mom can do all of these things because she takes care of herself. She’s been up late with Read more…

How Do I Decide What ‘Healthy’ Looks Like For Me?

What is ‘healthy?’ Is it eating fruit? Buying organic food? Cooking at home? Eating whole foods? Avoiding fat/carbs/sugar? Eating whole wheat or avoiding gluten? ‘Healthy’ is a hard word to define because part of it will be dictated by your individual body. For a person with Celiac Disease, whole wheat bread is not healthy. For someone who is lactose intolerant Greek yogurt is not healthy. Yet that same bread and yogurt can be incredibly nourishing Read more…

I Have A Black Thumb And A Big Garden

We have 5 kids and I have (somewhat) jokingly told my family that I am unable to keep anything else alive in our house. I have proven this fact by killing every house plant I’ve had for the past 15 years. However, we have an enormous garden that, most years, surprises me with it’s bounty. It is not uncommon for me to forget to water for a week or more at a time and there Read more…
