I probably don’t need to convince you to eat strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries…they’re delicious! They’re at their peak of freshness and lowest prices right now because they’re abundant and they go bad rather quickly so farmers and stores want to get them home with you as soon as possible.

You know they’re good for you, but did you know….

-They’re packed with Vitamins C, A and K….pretty much every organ in our bodies wants these to work well. Or at all. 🙂

-They’re rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Important if you enjoy things like strong bones, muscles that work, a cardiovascular system that keeps working, enough energy to get through the day and a body that can metabolize protein. All the good stuff.

When you’re out shopping for berries look for:

  • brightly colored berries that are dry, plump and firm.
  • avoid soft, moldy or shriveled berries
  • always check the bottom of the package…that’s frequently where mold or mushiness will start

How to use them:

  • Just wash and eat!
  • Freeze for later use or to pop on top of ice cream, oatmeal or in baked goods.
  • Use them to naturally sweeten oatmeal, smoothies or in place of syrup on pancakes. We have raspberry bushes in our yard and our kids LOVE using fresh berries in place of jam in PB&J sandwiches.
  • As dessert. Fresh berries with cream are amazing! This recipe sounds delicious…Fresh Berries with Maple Cream.
