I got cocky. I’d had some successes with swapping ingredients in recipes based on what I had. Last night the family sang my praises. Tonight I knew I’d pushed too far and my prayer before the meal was literally, ‘Lord, please let this be OK enough.’

We received a big batch of bok choy from our CSA last night and I thought I might be able to use it in place of cabbage for an ‘egg roll in a bowl’ meal. When I googled for people who had done this and found nothing I should have taken it as a warning. Instead, I charged ahead. It was OK-ish and the kids ate it, but only because I promised that I’d let a mid-week dessert slip in if they could finish it.

The tendency on blogs is to only publish our successes and highlights, but real life is a lottery with everything from amazing to hideous as the prizes. If you dinner flops and your kids give you this look as they try to force themselves to eat your food, you’re in good company! Tomorrow is another night with a meal that’s (hopefully) closer to the original recipe. 🙂
