We’ve all been there. Sometimes it’s on purpose and it’s totally worth it (vacation, holiday, birthday, etc). Sometimes it comes out of nowhere…we’re hormonal, the kids are acting like lunatics, work went nuts and it snowed. Again. We meant to deal with the stress gracefully, maybe prepare a home cooked meal and go for a walk. Instead we realize we just devoured a bag of chips, ate all the leftovers from everyone else’s plates and polished off the end of the ice cream. What happened?
From time to time I get a ‘confession’ email from a client, admitting that they just ate WAY TOO MUCH. Usually, it fits into the ‘it wasn’t worth it’ category because it wasn’t special, their stomach hurts and bloating is already setting in. My response to this is drastically different than it was 10 years ago, when I would find myself in the same situation and decide I’d already blown it so I might as well give up and eat what I wanted for the next 2 weeks. Maybe I’d try again then. The problem was, that didn’t work. In 2 weeks I didn’t magically make better choices.
Over the course of a LOT of trial and error and researching to find some real answers I realized the solution was simple. Deceptively simple. Here goes:
- Next time I’m hungry, eat a normal meal.
That’s it. Seriously. If i ate a lot I might not be hungry for the next meal…so I didn’t eat it. When I DID get hungry I simply ate a healthy meal. And, voila! I’m back on track. No crazy work outs to ‘burn off’ the extra calories. No restricting my food intake for the next week. No guilt trip over what I ‘should’ have done. Just move on.
The magic of this solution is that ‘TOO MUCH’ doesn’t have to turn into days or weeks of TOO MUCH. It doesn’t derail our progress towards our goals. In fact, planned treats and special meals are part of a healthy life! With some practice we can learn to enjoy an occasional indulgent meal, without eating so much it hurts! The balance of a consistently healthy life with occasional splurges is what makes both so enjoyable…they complement each other!
If you find yourself in the ‘TOO MUCH’ category today after all the Easter celebrations and wonder how you can work towards that balance I’d love to talk to you! We have a FREE group starting today that’s focused on replacing our old, unhelpful habits with water and produce…the stuff that nourishes our bodies! There are no hidden costs and you won’t be expected to buy a bunch of weird ingredients. If you know that encouragement would help you make a better choice today I can still sneak you in. (Shhhh!)
