This weeks Bright Spot came from Amanda who identified her need for consistency and planning in our first week of working together. Over the past few months she has built a foundation of healthy habits, but working long night shifts every few days was wreaking havoc on her consistency. Her days off were full of experimenting with new foods (she has had some delicious and not-so-delicious, but hilarious, results!) and finding ways to work out with her kids, but then she’d have several night shifts in a row and the stress + break room full of junk food would trip her up. She got frustrated, but she jumped right back in each week and tried again! The work is paying off. Her goal has changed from just making a meal plan to consistently implementing it all week long and the junk food at work that used to feel like it was unavoidable is now tempting, but something she has control over.
My food choices and meals are improving. I’m getting better at trying things and I’ve had a fairly solid ~2 weeks here where I’ve made consistent good (Not perfect) choices and I see it spilling over. I’ve also noticed that that consistency is spilling over into work so I don’t feel like such a “victim” of whatever is in the break room or candy drawer. Again, not to say I haven’t had candy at work, but I don’t feel that “sick” pull that I can’t walk by the drawer without opening it. Consequently I have been able to leave work without feeling bloated. I’m still struggling to recover from work the next day, but I know that will come gradually with not having to recover or suffer from so many bad choices.
This is what small, sustainable steps toward health look like. It’s not a white-knuckled, overnight transformation. It’s doable steps, practiced consistently until they become habits we no longer have to think so hard about. And then we’re able to take the next step. Amanda is healthier today because she gets up each day and takes one more step…and YOU can be too!
